The annual South Otago A&P Show hosts an incredible event year after year.

There are so many quirks and unique aspects of the show.

One of those is the annual Show Queens contest — a way for South Otago women aged 18-26 to step out of their comfort zones and build confidence within themselves.

Contest organiser and previous winner Bayley Coates says the day is all about empowerment and growing as a person.

‘‘The Show Queens event is all about challenging yourself to become the best version of you.’’

‘‘To make connections and friendships, to immerse yourself within the community and to have fun while you’re doing it.’’

This year, six South Otago women have entered the contest.

These women have been embedding themselves into the community through the weeks and worked on their strengths and weaknesses as women, all preparing to step up on the day of the show and present a speech to their community.

Along the way, they have learned how to crack a heavy duty stock-whip, ride a horse, meet community groups and various other skills to build themselves up.

Each of the contestants is backed by a personal sponsor — Hewitt’s Tractor Services, Roots, Ray White Balclutha, Heart and Soul Cafe, Bill Butler and Mask Hair and Beauty.

The Show Queens contest reaches its conclusion at 12.30pm on show day, when each contestant makes their speech.

The overall overall winner will be announced at 3pm.
