Community Board Notes
WEST OTAGO
Often we can take the area we live in for granted as we go about our everyday lives.
Families have been out and exploring many of the fabulous spots our district has to offer, over the summer.
Black Gully Domain, the Leithen Glen, and a favourite of mine (with a little bias), the Parkhill Domain, are just a few of these areas.
The Leithen, in a forest setting, and Black Gully, where there is a playground that has kept children enthralled for generations, boast camping, accommodation huts and bush walks.
All of these places are beautiful and tranquil, where families can meet to swim, barbecue, picnic, kick a ball around, go yabbying in the creeks, or try to catch those elusive eels that have been swimming around your legs.
They are great places to relax and read a good book or meet and chat to some of the many anglers on the Pomahaka River, trying to hook a fish.
These are all on our doorstep.
We have Whiskey Gully, where you can take a quick stroll up the lookout track and enjoy the view over West Otago and be rewarded with the most magnificent vista.
Or walk up the track to the waterfall. This may take a little longer, but is certainly worthwhile. If you prefer, make a day of it and walk from Whiskey to Black Gully along the mountain.
This may require a bit more stamina and can be walked either way.
Many of these recreational areas in our district are run and maintained by groups of volunteers in our community, who take a great deal of pride in keeping these mown and tidy for all to enjoy.
With summer now almost over, and school holidays just around the corner, if you have a moment or two to spare, get out and enjoy what our beautiful piece of paradise has to offer.
Take the time to catch up or reconnect with friends, family and neighbours.
Welcome visitors and those that are new to our district.
Enjoy a chop and tomato sauce from the barbecue, or a coffee and cake, maybe an ice cream (or two), pack a picnic. Jump on your bike, head to the park.
Enjoy the outdoors and spectacular places West Otago has to offer.
Take time to reflect on our great community.
West Otago is truly a beautiful place.
