Nate Latta (left) 12, watches schoolmate Liam Huddleston, 12, get some practise in at Balclutha Primary School for the Tony Tourell Primary School Golf Tournament.

The annual tournament has been contested at golf courses around the region this week and the final round will be played at Balclutha Golf Club today.

The tournament attracts local, primary-school aged divot-stompers to chip in and chase the small white ball in search of eagles and birdies.

Liam’s grandfather got him in to golfing and this year’s tournament will be his second. ‘‘I find it relaxing, especially if you hit a hole on par,’’ he said.

Schoolmate Nate was looking forward to a day on the greens and fairway.

‘‘Putt for dough . . .’’ he said. ‘‘But I really like the satisfaction of a long drive.’’

Sports Clutha regional co-ordinator Craig Gordon said he was delighted with the turnout, as school children from across the region got out of the classroom to try their hand at lowering their handicap.
