Balclutha Primary School physical activity leaders (from left) Meg Smith, 11, Lily Inglis, 12, and Eva Smith, 11, decide whether it is ‘‘better out than in’’ at the fun-run and walk following the school cross-country last Thursday while Riley Hill (inset), 11, shows how Shrek does it.

The assault course-style fun-run also had hay-bale hurdles, a cargo net and other obstacles to make the sports day an event to look forward to next year.

‘‘Not everyone enjoys running and we often get a bit of ‘cross-country flu’ at this time of year,’’ principal Vicki Neave said,

‘‘So this year, after we’ve held the cross-country and celebrated the children who’ve worked hard with their running and enjoyed the competitive event, we have the fun-run and walk to give everybody a physical activity they can get enthusiastic about and take home exciting memories of a big day everybody enjoyed.’’
