Pursued by players from Stirling School, Reina Thompson (9) is about to touch down for Waihola District School at the Clutha District Rippa rugby tournament.
Ninety-five teams from 18 schools competed in year 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8 categories last Tuesday at Balclutha Showgrounds, where six-minute halves made the six-a-side, try-only competition fun and fast.
South Otago High School supplied 35 pupils to referee and support 16 Sport Otago referee and management staff.
There was also assistance from the Otago Rugby Football Union and the Big River Country women’s team.
‘‘It’s amazing to have such a great turnout of teams, referees, and helpers,’’ Sport Otago organiser Craig Gordon said.
‘‘There’s countless positives with so many children getting active in a sport that’s new for many and having an absolute blast.’’ REPORT & PHOTO: NICK BROOK
