The committee of the Owaka Swimming Baths has announced the opening of the 2022›23 pool season ‘‘sooner than expected’’, following a $650,000 upgrade.
The pool usually opens at Labour Weekend.
However, with the upgrades completed ‘‘we want to increase the length of the season and enable swimming lessons for the youth of the community in the school holidays,’’ committee chairwoman Linda Wilson said.
In a speech at the pool’s opening on Saturday, Mrs Wilson said the project could not have been completed without the help of the Clutha District Council, Otago Community Trust, the Trust Community Foundation, Owaka Lions and community donations and working bees.
The outdoor 1979 facility was ‘‘housed’’ in 1982 and the most recent improvements included solar heating, new filtration and treatment facilities and accessories such as ropes and covers.
About 80 people attended the grand opening, with many keen to dive straight into their prized community possession.
The South Otago Primary and Intermediate Schools’ Triathlon will be held in Owaka to showcase the finished pool, and details for use can be found by contacting Owaka Heated Swimming Pool online.
