Former sales rep Tim Owen (left) is now a full-time food producer as well as manager of Gold’s Bakery, where he and employee Brooke Walsh spent last Wednesday, June 5, under the tutelage of previous owner Barry Robertson. ‘‘We’re really grateful for his mentoring today,’’ Mr Owen said as he quickly painted glazing over another batch of pies. ‘‘We’re really passionate about baking the best quality homemade pies on site — and so is Barry — but it’s the maintenance of that quality and passion throughout the speed and scale the customers demand that we really care about, because things have got really busy these days.’’ It is good news for old-school locals who still consider the classic Kiwi ‘‘bought lunch’’ is a pie and a doughnut. REPORT & PHOTO: NICK BROOK.
