Partygoer badly hurt

Police were ‘‘flat out’’ last weekend as plans for prevention and safety were replaced by a high volume of family harm and mental health callouts between Friday and Sunday nights.

Units arrived at an out-of-control party involving mainly 14- to 16-year-olds and a few adults, who were ‘‘probably the main instigators’’, in Pakefield St, Balclutha, in the early hours of Sunday.

One partygoer was found with serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital following ‘‘a fight that appears to have carried on after the fight was won’’.

Investigations were ongoing and several charges were likely for more than one person.

Police clarified that of the two drink-driving charges following from roadside breathalyser stops in the Lawrence area on Saturday, January 28, neither had any connection to competitors or spectators of the annual Lawrence Rodeo held on the same day.
