Clutha District Council wants to reassure the district that the new destination toilets in Milton and Balclutha will be protected, following reports of vandalism at the Milton site where a neighbouring wall was broken last month.

“Installation of CCTV is planned for this area as part of the Milton Main St upgrade. However, we are looking at temporary cameras as an interim security measure. Council has been in touch with the neighbouring property owner and we are arranging for the damaged fence to be repaired,” a CDC spokesman said.

A cleaning contractor who asked not to be named said youngsters were known to have held drinking parties in the toilet’s spacious disabled and parenting rest-room and attempted to set the plastic baby-change table alight.

The destination toilets have a combined cost of more than $1.3 million. REPORT/PHOTO: NICK BROOK
