Kaitangata Primary School pupil Rex Ellis (5) gives the signal for a fire truck water hose to be turned off with the help of ‘‘Firefighter Kent’’, while pupil Aida Begg (12) watches on.
The national ‘‘Wood is Good’’ programme came to Kaitangata Primary School last Thursday to educate pupils and teachers on aspects of the sector from machinery and timber use to silviculture, conservation and land management.
Forestry workers, including operators of logging trucks and fire trucks, came along to explain what their roles entailed in the industry.
‘‘Educating young minds about the industry helps to show the importance of the third-biggest export business in New Zealand, as well as practical safety,’’ Wood is Good national coordinator Vickie Humphries said.
The Wood is Good programme travels to many primary schools across the country.
