Kaka Pt Surfing for Farmers is already averaging upward of 40 surfing farmers, including (from left) Karla Gilder, Thomas Grey, Leanne Woodhead and Simon Cullen, every Wednesday night. Professional surf instructors provided by generous sponsors bring wetsuits and big boards for any rural professional to drop in and cut a tunnel. Sheep and beef farmer Ronnie Smith, of Owaka, was there for the 18th time. ‘‘I give the turf up when the surf’s up,’’ Mr Smith said. ‘‘Heal the body with a bit of salt water. It’s good fun and you find yourself bumping into more people you know when you’re out at the supermarket and that.’’ Surfing for Farmers meets at 5.30pm every Wednesday at the Kaka Point Surf Life Saving Club rooms, Kaka Point Beach, until the end of March.
