Club a ‘second family’

Kaka Pt Surf Life Saving Club lifeguards Liam O’Riordan Lawlor (16) and Olivia Richardson had their eyes on the tide and their backs against the club’s new side-by-side ATV while on duty this season.

‘‘The club’s really been a second family,’’ Ms Richardson said.

‘‘I’ve got so much out of it — travel, competitions, networks, courses and awards.

‘‘I’ve helped save six lives here at KP, four of them children.

‘‘Anybody keen on fitness and the outdoors and doing something for the community.

‘‘I’d really recommend the opportunities of surf lifesaving.

‘‘If you’re curious, come along for a look and see if it’s for you.’’

At 23, Ms Richardson is already a ten-year veteran of Kaka Pt Surf Life Saving Club and will be missed by the club and Kaka Pt beach regulars when she moves to Christchurch this week to continue her tertiary medical studies.

The club can be found through Surf Life Saving New Zealand social media.
