When Wayne Neiman took over Absolute Locating from Wayne Humphries in December 2022, he was up for the challenge.

Mr Neiman’s business involves finding cables and tracing underground services so contractors can safely and securely go about their projects without making a mess.
Cable locating involves transmitting variable switchable frequencies into a conductor by a battery-powered transmitter.
Tracing the conductor is achieved by the use of a handheld receiver, set to the transmitted frequency.
There are three methods of tracing — direct connect, inductive clamp or inductive (laying the transmitter over and in line of a conductor).
The depth of the conductor is also obtained and the location is spray-marked.
‘‘I assist many contractors, farmers, plumbers, and people who dig holes in general,’’ Mr Neiman said.
‘‘I mainly locate communication and power networks.
‘‘I can also find some drains and alkathene pipes with the aid of a wire inserted, and am able to locate cable breaks.’’
Locating underground services involves a health and safety aspect as he has clients who have areas of work that need to be swept, even though there is thought to be no presence of services in the area.
‘‘I am on call 24/7, and it takes me all over the area, from Southland and Otago. I can travel to areas like Cromwell, Queenstown, Nightcaps, Invercargill, Mosgiel, Owaka and many more areas. It’s great that I’m centrally located here in Gore, as I can be in most places in an hour or two or less.’’
Mr Neiman says a great aspect about the business is getting to a job on the same day he is called.
‘‘Usually I can get out somewhere on the same day or the day after. It’s definitely a drive, but it’s good to be able to help straight away.
‘‘I do straight forward quotes, it’s not a problem at all. I’ve got a pretty big clientele who are more than happy to be serviced.’’
