More events cancelled

Two further key summer events on the Clutha calendar have been cancelled.

The Otago Shearing and Woolhandling Championships were scheduled to take place at Telford this Saturday, but have been cancelled due to the move to Covid›19 Red traffic light status.

A second casualty of pandemic restrictions is the Papatowai Challenge in the Catlins, which was to have taken place on March 5.

Organiser Craig Gordon, of Sport Clutha, said it was with great regret the 26th annual running and walking event would not proceed.

‘‘This decision follows the emergence of Omicron in New Zealand and the entire country moving to the Covid› 19 protection framework Red setting.

‘‘On apositive we can look back on how fortunate we were to stage the 2021 event, missing the lockdown by a matter of hours.’’

He said planning for next year’s event, on February 25, was already under way.

‘‘There will be some exciting changes, including a 5km run/walk event and a tandem section.’’
