South Otago High School pupil Keely Hill has been selected for the Otago under-18 women’s rugby team.
The 16-year-old said she was “pretty stoked” to find out she had been selected, especially after her performance was hampered during trials.
“I had an injured finger that messed things up for me but I got through it,” Keely said.
She was the only player from South Otago to have been selected. One other girl was selected from West Otago and the rest were based in Dunedin.
She had since been training hard for what would be her third season with the team, which finished second at last year’s South Island under-18 tournament.
Keely had only been playing the game itself for three years, and said it gave her a “big adrenaline rush”.
“No two games are alike, and that’s because all the girls you play against are different.”
She was carrying on a family tradition. Her father used to play rugby, and two brothers were previously in the under-20s New Zealand Maori team.
