Residents at Clutha Views Lifecare, Balclutha, including (from left) Shirley McNutt, Isobelle Robinson, Lois Stenning›English, Sandra Booth, Reta Crawford, Averly McLaren and Roma Duncan come together to create an Anzac Day tribute. The indoor display included wreaths, written tributes, hand›crafted poppies, memorabilia and pictures of loved ones who were servicemen.

‘‘We started it a couple of days ago to thank the RSA and honour the men and women who went away to war,’’ Mrs Booth said.

‘‘We knew a lot of them, they were husbands, friends and uncles, and some of them didn’t come back.’’

Mrs McNutt said she was the last resident at Clutha Views whose husband had fought in World War 2.

‘‘He got to be a sergeant driving tanks before he came back. He went away when he was only 22.’’ REPORT & PHOTO: NICK BROOK
