The walls will go up soon as work continues on the one-bedroom transportable home being built by high school pupils in Balclutha.
Nine senior pupils from South Otago High School are taking part in the Big River Homes trades academy on-site programme in Balclutha, learning skills needed for a career in the building industry.
Otago Polytechnic engineering, construction and lifestyle tutor Jamie Todd said the students have developed immensely since they started the pilot programme earlier this year.
“Personally, they have all come a long way, learning how [to] handle tools and safely operate the machinery, and along the way they have had a lot of fun.” Mr Todd said.
The Otago Secondary-Tertiary College (OSTC) Building and Construction (Level 3) course is a unique programme which allows students to be part of a team constructing a building from start to finish and learning many skills along the way and qualifying for NCEA credits.
Mr Todd said the Polytechnic was now looking at options for extending the course in the future to other centres, because of the success of the pilot programme.
