Howl of a Protest

Last Friday’s Howl of a Protest event, organised by Groundswell New Zealand, rolled through Balclutha as it did through many towns and cities throughout the country. In Balclutha it was estimated by observers that more than 300 utes and tractors, SUVs and cars paraded along the main street, taking more than an hour to pass before protesters and supporters assembled at the Elizabeth St Plaza to hear local volunteer Damianne Wells present the Groundswell manifesto, accompanied by shouts of ‘‘enough is enough’’. Those taking part were supporting Groundswell’s call to protest against what many in the rural sector say are ‘‘unworkable’’ Government regulations.

Clutha Leader reporter John Cosgrove and contributor Janice Brockett captured some of the action.
