With the lockdown giving people time to contemplate their gardens, Forest & Bird South Otago is hoping green-fingered practitioners old and new will jump at the opportunity to have some seasonal plants delivered.
Member Jane Young said the group had to come up with a clever alternative in lieu of its usual autumn plant sale.
‘‘We went through about six different possible versions as to how we could do it. Things just changed so quickly. Doing it online looked like an option.’’
The group was advertising the sale through its Facebook page, and tapping into those already on their email list.
Mrs Young said Covid-19 Alert Level 3 would allow contactless delivery of the plants to properties around Owaka.
‘‘They’re in the nursery at our place. Tell us what you’d like, and we’ll arrange just to drop them somewhere in Owaka.’’
There were about 35 different types of plants to give out, but it was unclear how long the sale would last.
She was surprised that plants had not been considered an essential item during the lockdown.
‘‘There is great therapeutic value in putting plants in the ground.’’
And it seems that the community agrees, swamping Mrs Young’s email with inquiries about which plants were on offer.
‘‘I think people are going a bit stir-crazy. They’re wandering around their gardens thinking ‘what should I put there?’’’ Mrs Young said.
‘‘And we’ve got lots of suggestions for them.’’
