Owaka Four Square baker Susan Hartley prepares to take a bite from one of the store’s special love-heart hot cross buns on Thursday.
Mrs Hartley said she and fellow bakers Joanna Hewson and Dianne Chilton had come up with the affectionate innovation before Easter in an effort to “cheer up the locals”.
Other buns bearing letters spelling “OWAKA”sold well.
“We just wanted to brighten up people’s days over Easter with a bit of fun. Feedback from customers has been great.”
Although Mrs Hartley would not reveal the store’s secret recipe for its seasonal delicacies, she was prepared to divulge the main ingredient: “They’re made with love, of course.”
