‘‘Major repair work’’ will soon entail the closure of the Tuapeka Mouth bridge to vehicles for about three months.
Clutha District Council group manager service delivery Jules Witt said the bridge would be closed from 7am on Monday to October 15.
‘‘While the bridge is closed there will be a footbridge installed for pedestrian access over the river,’’ Mr Witt said.
Signs for detour routes would be displayed next to the bridge closure signage. Mr Witt said the repair job had been on the cards for some time.
‘‘Previous repair work showed that the bridge abutment was damaged. This damage was then investigated further with funding not available for repair,’’ he said.
The council approached the NZ Transport Agency and secured subsidised funding to carry out the work.
‘‘This should be the last major bridge work, apart from routine maintenance, for the next 30 years.’’
