South Otago High School goes back to the ’80s and from the decade that brought us Max Headroom,Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, yuppies, Reaganomics and of course MTV, comes South Otago High School’s latest production, Back to the 80’s, the totally awesome musical written by Neil Gooding.
Back to the 80’s the musical tells the story of the senior class of William Ocean High School, as remembered through the eyes of now 30-something former pupil Corey Palmer.
This coming-of-age musical revolves around a class president election with lashings of Star Wars, ’80s glam rock and teen hormones thrown in for good luck.
South Otago High School assistant principal and director Jo Jory said there was a large cast in the this production.
“There are a total of 35, mostly senior students from SOHS including five backstage plus others who have helped out painting the sets.
“It’s a really fun show, and the students have been enthusiastic about it right from the beginning.
“It’s also been an awesome opportunity for kids from different year levels to build friendships.”
She said that sometimes it had felt a little daunting, particularly because many pupils today are so busy, which has made it hard to stick to a rehearsal schedule.
“We’re nearly there though now, and full credit goes to the cast’s commitment and perseverance. I hope people come along and enjoy it,” she said.
Highlights include the boys led by the cool Michael Feldman (Jarvis Penn) singing Footloose; Cyndi (Kareena Dunlop) singing Madonna’s Material Girl, Billy (James Briones) singing Never Gonna Give You Up, plus many more including: I’m Walking On Sunshine, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and the energetic chorus singing the B52s classic, Loveshack
Performances will be on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 20 and 21, starting at 7pm, in the school hall.
