Sub-Head goes here

Learning to write snappy ten minute plays are (from left) Carol Geissler, tutor Denise Dent, Susan Landels and Ngaire Taylor during a writing tutorial in Balclutha on Saturday. It may seem a long way from the Globe Theatre of Shakespeare’s day but for the group locals it was a very productive day’s activities organiser Denise Dent said.
An experienced playwright herself, Ms Dent said the group looked at what makes an effective short play and shared some tasty food along the way.
“In particular, we explored ways of giving plays a distinctly rural Kiwi voice, as opposed to the British or American ones we often end up using,’’ she said.
“Although I have written a few myself, mine still have an English voice, with English character types, so it was really interesting for me to work with South Otago people who could develop authentic local characters and dialogue.’’
“Between us, we devised and wrote a ten›minute play which we will submit to the South Otago Theatrical Society when they are looking for short plays for next year’s Playing Around programme.
“Ngaire Taylor, who organises that show, was impressed with it and thinks it could well be staged in 2022, a prospect that the group is very excited about.’’
