From the Deep South to the Far North, Clutha residents are encouraged to send donations to Northlanders feeling the effects of Cyclone Gabrielle.
‘‘In many ways the Far North is akin to Clutha, with similar demographics, size and communities,’’ Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan said.
‘‘While we have a smaller population, this is Clutha’s opportunity to make a difference to our friends in the Far North. The devastation is among our nation’s worst and worthy of us all committing to the response.’’
The Adopt-a-Community campaign matches councils unaffected by Cyclone Gabrielle with councils and communities badly hit. The focus is on driving donations straight to the adopted community’s mayoral relief funds.
‘‘I didn’t hesitate to say yes. This is a great initiative for Clutha and I’m sure the generosity of all locals will shine through as we get in behind the Far North. Our thoughts go out to all those affected,’’ Mr Cadogan said.
The Far North was first to feel the devastating effects of Cyclone Gabrielle, and while not harmed as severely as other areas, many places were still without power.
‘‘We are still picking up the pieces,’’ Northland District Mayor Moko Tepania said.
‘‘We are so grateful to Clutha for adopting us in the Far North, and any assistance will go direct to those wha ¯nau affected. Whakawhetai nui, we can’t thank you enough.’’
